There are two suspects in the investigation by the Rome prosecutor’s office for manslaughter in relation to the death of a 22-year-old girl, Margaret Spada, originally from Syracuse, who died during a rhinoplasty operation in an outpatient clinic in a medical center in the capital. This is the owner of the medical center and his son, both doctors. The girl, who died last November 7, according to what was reconstructed by Adnkronos, would have felt ill after the administration of local anesthesia in the facility where she had arrived with her boyfriend from Sicily. The young woman apparently identified the medical center after seeing an advert on social media. The file is entrusted to prosecutor Erminio Amelio who has delegated the investigations and acquisitions to the Nas carabinieri. In the structure, which does not have an external sign, no documents, medical records, informed consent or registration relating to the intervention were found. In the next few hours the prosecutor will entrust the task of carrying out the autopsy to the forensic medicine institute of the Tor Vergata polyclinic.

«The family, the parents, the sister at this moment are surrounded by the affection of many people and are closed in a silence of pain that cannot be explained in words. They ask to know the circumstances and causes of their daughter’s death”, the words of the lawyer Alessandro Vinci, lawyer for Margaret Spada’s family. «The parents knew where their daughter had gone to have the operation and Margaret had entrusted herself to an Italian surgeon, she did not follow fashions or trends where one often goes in Eastern or North African countries. That structure was supposed to provide guarantees but it will be up to the investigation to ascertain this”, explained the lawyer.

How can regulations surrounding the marketing of medical services be improved to enhance patient safety?
**Interview with Dr. Elisa Romano, Medical Ethics Expert**
**Editor:** Today we have Dr. Elisa Romano with us, a prominent expert in medical ethics, to discuss the recent tragic case involving the death of 22-year-old Margaret Spada during a rhinoplasty in a medical center in Rome. Dr. Romano, thank you for joining us.
**Dr. Romano:** Thank you for having me.
**Editor:** The investigation has identified two suspects in this case, both associated with the medical center where Margaret underwent surgery. What are your initial thoughts on the implications of this?
**Dr. Romano:** This situation is indeed tragic, and it raises significant concerns about patient safety and regulatory oversight in outpatient surgical centers. If the allegations are proven, it underscores the importance of accountability among medical professionals, particularly in elective surgeries.
**Editor:** The report mentions that the medical center did not have key documentation, such as informed consent or medical records. How critical is this documentation in such procedures?
**Dr. Romano:** Informed consent is fundamental in any medical procedure. It ensures that the patient is fully aware of the risks and benefits involved. The absence of such documents not only poses serious ethical questions but also legal ones, as consent is essential to validate that the patient has been appropriately informed and their autonomy respected.
**Editor:** Margaret reportedly chose this medical center after seeing an advertisement on social media. Do you think there should be stricter regulations regarding how medical services are marketed?
**Dr. Romano:** Absolutely. The marketing of medical services must be regulated more stringently to prevent cases where individuals choose facilities based on misleading information. Patients often rely on these advertisements, so it is crucial that they represent genuine standards of care and not just marketing hype.
**Editor:** As investigators proceed with the autopsy and continue their inquiry, what can we expect in terms of accountability for medical practitioners involved in such cases?
**Dr. Romano:** If negligence is found, the individuals responsible could face criminal charges, including manslaughter, as seen in this case. Beyond legal consequences, there should also be a reevaluation of how outpatient facilities are monitored and regulated to prevent future tragedies.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Romano, for shedding light on this distressing situation. We appreciate your insights on the importance of patient safety and ethical practices in healthcare.
**Dr. Romano:** Thank you for discussing this vital issue. It’s crucial that we continue to advocate for patient safety and transparency in healthcare.
