Around 45 million people are expected in the Vatican and Rome for the major pilgrimage event.

Construction work in Rome for the Holy Year 2025 will continue even following the major pilgrim event begins. The investment plan does not end in the current year, but would continue in 2025 and 2026, said the managing director of the responsible company “Giubileo 2025”, Marco Sangiorgio, to the Italian daily newspaper “Il Messaggero” (Thursday). “However, the most necessary work will be completed by 2024. The construction sites in the following two years will then be less significant,” explained Sangiorgio. Overall, we are on schedule.

The managing director praised the positive effects that the infrastructure projects would have for the city of Rome. Cooperation with the Vatican is useful, although the Vatican does not contribute financially to the construction work. At the national level, the pilgrimage event will have a profitable impact on the gross national product.

In order to be able to manage the flow of traffic and pilgrims, numerous construction projects are to be implemented. This includes an underground car tunnel so that pedestrians will be able to walk from Castel Sant’Angelo via the Via della Conciliazione to St. Peter’s Basilica without crossing a street.

According to Il Messaggero, the company “Giubileo 2025” is wholly owned by the Italian Ministry of Finance. It is intended to support the special representative for the anniversary year, Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri, in his task.
