With around 8,000 brown bears, Romania has the largest population in Europe outside of Russia. Now the administration ends up on the table of the elected representatives.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu says he would call the National Assembly to a meeting with the aim of agreeing on measures in high-risk areas.

– It will not be free to shoot bears in Romania, says the Prime Minister, who has not said exactly when the meeting with the elected representatives will be held.

Local media regularly report on bears attacking people and livestock. The attacks once morest people usually lead to injuries, not deaths. Nevertheless, 26 people have lost their lives in bear attacks in the last 20 years, the country’s environment minister stated in March.

In 2021, the government allowed local authorities to trap bears that entered houses and gardens if attempts to chase them away were unsuccessful.

Animal rights activists criticized the decision and said the authorities had not done enough to try other measures such as electric fences and better management.
