Between concert and dance piece, Romances inciertos, another Orlando summons three figures of Spanish culture, embodied on stage by dancer and choreographer François Chaignaud. Transformation and passion are at the heart of this intense and detailed fresco.
Mixing times and genres, Romances inciertos recounts a perpetual metamorphosis. La Doncella Guerrera, a young girl who dresses up as a man to go into battle; San Miguel, archangel sung in all its sensuality by the poet Federico García Lorca; Tarara, Andalusian gypsy with disappointed loves and hidden androgyny: through the centuries, these ambiguous figures of Spanish culture have nourished the imagination and the arts. Mounted on stilts or pointe shoes, dressed in symbolic armor or finely embroidered shawls, dancer and choreographer François Chaignaud delivers a new version, sung and danced, of their story.
Anger, pain, but also religious passion or seduction… over the course of three acts, each devoted to a character, feelings mingle, as do styles. The dancer’s gestures match the melodies arranged by Nino Laisné. Here once more, the transformation serves as a guide: for theorbo, bandoneon, percussion or viola da gamba, each musician appropriates melodies written for other instruments, at the confluence of Spanish music from the oral or scholarly tradition. Around them, panels of tapestries sketch a landscape with multiple historical influences.
