Rolls-Royce announced that it has successfully completed initial testing of its UltraFan technology demonstrator at its factory in Derby, UK. The first tests were carried out with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
It’s a historic moment for Rolls-Royce – it’s the first time in 54 years that the aero-engine maker has tested a whole new architecture engine and “this is proof of what can be achieved when industry and governments work together”says the press release from the reactor manufacturer.
Confirming the capability of the suite of technologies incorporated into the demonstrator is a big step towards improving the efficiency of current and future aircraft engines. UltraFan offers a 10% efficiency improvement over the Trent XWBwhich is already the world’s most efficient large aero engine in service.
In the shorter term, there are options to transfer technologies from the development program UltraFan to the engines Current Trentsoffering customers “even greater availability, reliability and efficiency”.
Longer term, UltraFan’s scalable technology from approximately 25,000 to 110,000 lbs of thrust offers the potential to power new narrowbody and widebody aircraft expected in the years to come. 2030.
