Rollable, full of biometric sensors… Samsung Display wants to revolutionize the screen of our smartphones

To remain the world leader in Oled mobile display technologies, Samsung Display must constantly reinvent itself. The South Korean giant is also expected at the turn, and should not go unnoticed during SID Display Week in Los Angeles, which takes place from May 23 to 25.

The brand will indeed take advantage of the event to unveil two innovations that might prove very interesting for the future of telephony. The first is called Rollable Flex; as its name suggests, this screen can roll up on itself and thus allow significant space saving.

This rather stunning prototype can indeed multiply its size by five, more than all the displays presented so far. This makes it possible to go from a 5 cm slab to 25 cm (12.4 inches) high.

A promising technology, which would obviously make sense on a tablet or laptop. However, the firm did not comment on the thickness of the device. We know that it is also working on a technology called Flex In & Out, which allows screens to bend in both directions.

This might be of real interest on models like the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold, which might use the main slab as an external screen.

Heading for health

The second particularly striking technology at the show is called Sensor Oled Display. Unlike traditional screens, to which a fingerprint sensor is embedded in the lower area, this type of panel includes within it the sensors necessary for the recognition of fingerprints on its entire surface. It would therefore be enough to put your finger anywhere for it to be recognized, which would therefore improve the performance of screens with ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, which are still rare.

But this technology would have many other advantages. Samsung indeed promises biometric functionalities, allowing much more advanced monitoring of certain aspects of our health. The photodiodes hidden in its screen, when two fingers are placed on its surface, should make it possible to provide information such as heart rate and blood pressure, or even to detect significant stress peaks. What significantly improve the capabilities in this area of products such as smartphones and connected watches… but also to project into new markets.
