In two weeks the play “Charley’s Aunt” will be back on stage in Switzerland. As in the 80s, Rolf Knie (74) will slip into the role of the aunt and thus into women’s clothing. He talks to “SRF” regarding the piece and is asked regarding a controversial scene.
In the play from 1892 there is a Füdli groper. Is the piece still contemporary?
“But sure,” says Knie, “comedy is always contemporary.” If something is good, then it is good for every time and every age. The play has been slightly adapted to today’s times. But the groper was not taken out.
Because you can “certainly” show them that there is nothing bad regarding it. «Let’s stop it! So much of comedy has been taken away from us because of political correctness.” Knie thinks they have taken an “unpleasant direction”.
The actor has already attracted negative attention several times with controversial statements. He was first reprimanded by the ombudsman because of sexist comments in an SRF dance show. He was then thrown out of the jury.
