Roiss: Russian gas supplies via Ukraine will end in 2024

The supply of Russian gas to Austria via the territory of Ukraine is expected to end in 2024. Former OMV boss Gerhard Roiss has pointed this out. “We have to prepare for that in Austria.” As he further told the ORF “ZiB2” on Wednesday evening, the Ukrainian Deputy Minister for Energy recently informed him that Ukraine would not extend the gas transit contract with Russia beyond the end of 2024.

At the end of 2019, the Russian state gas company Gazprom signed a five-year contract with Ukraine for the transit of Russian natural gas. This ends on December 31, 2024. Austria is also supplied with Russian natural gas via this pipeline.

Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) had Roiss and the former E-Control boss Walter Boltz develop a concept for the exit from Russian gas and presented it at the end of April. The minister wants to make energy suppliers more responsible for storing non-Russian gas and transfer parts of OMV’s gas business to the state holding company ÖBAG. Furthermore, Austria should secure gas volumes from OMV in Norway and Romania, including transport capacities.

The EU Commission recently criticized Austria for not having a “clearly defined short-term” plan for complete decoupling from Russian gas imports. Although Austria was able to reduce its dependency, it is still well above the EU average.
