On Thursday, December 21, 2023, a rogue wave destroyed the deck of a cruise ship. The boat lost its navigation capacity and had to benefit from a large rescue operation for its 261 passengers to return to England.

The wave made short work of the bridge. On Thursday, a cruise ship was hit by a rogue wave which resulted in such damage that it was no longer able to navigate.

Flooding and power outages

The boat was carrying 261 passengers and 131 crew members. Departing from the port of Floroe, Norway, the cruise ship Maud was en route to England at Tilbury. During its journey, the aircraft was hit by a rogue wave.

The force of the water shattered the ship’s windows. Strong winds also damaged the Maud’s bridge, several floods and power outages were recorded on board. At the end of the incident, the teams deplored a “temporary loss of power”.

The Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Center specifies that the wave caused no injuries. “There is no electricity on the ship. The main engine works but the navigation systems and radars do not work,” lamented a spokesperson for the organization.

Rogue wave

According to the ESA (European space agency), “colossal ocean waves that can reach the height of a ten-story building have been recognized as one of the main causes of large ship sinkings.”

Over the past twenty years, rogue waves, called “Monster waves” by our Anglo-Saxon colleagues, are said to have sunk nearly 200 giant oil tankers over 200 meters long.

Rescue

The ship was sailing 200 kilometers off the coast of Denmark and 330 kilometers from the Anglo-Saxon coast. The authorities took the decision to tow the machinewhich despite everything remained stable.
