Roglic ahead of overall victory after winning the last Giro time trial

The Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic caused a crash at the top of the rankings on the penultimate stage of the Giro d’Italia. The former ski jumper prevailed on Saturday in the final mountain time trial not far from his home from Tarvisio to Monte Lussari and snatched the leader’s pink jersey from Brit Geraint Thomas. The jumbo pro will probably be the first Slovenian to win an overall Giro on Sunday in Rome.

Roglic overcame a mechanical problem not far from his Slovenian home when his chain jumped out on a bump just before the finish line and he stood still for a few seconds. “People gave me extra watts,” said the 33-year-old in the first interview. “It’s not over until it’s over. But it’s looking good,” he said of the final stage in Rome. “The round is pretty tough.”

Roglic made up a 26-second deficit in the overall standings. His lead before the final day is 14 seconds over Thomas and 1:15 over Portuguese Joao Almeida, who also finished third in the mountain time trial. On the last attack, there are traditionally no more attacks on the overall leader.

Almost three years ago, Roglic had to hand over the apparently safe yellow jersey to his compatriot Tadej Pogacar on the penultimate day of the time trial in La-Planche-des-Belles-Filles at the Tour de France. This time he turned things around – and in a place he remembered fondly. In Tarvisio in 2007 he won the gold medal on the ski jump at the Junior World Championships with the Slovenian team before later switching to cycling.

Lower Austrian Patrick Konrad finished 54th in the 18.6-kilometer battle once morest the clock, 6:20 minutes behind Roglic and retained 20th place overall. After a 107th place on the day, Lukas Pöstlberger is still 95th overall.
