14 years following the events, those accused of the murder of Marion Génin have been convicted. The jurors of the Assize Court chose life imprisonment for Roger Hilaire, Fabian Chérubin and Dany Francis. The three Saint Lucians were found guilty of kidnapping and then killing the 36-year-old optician in September 2008.
A verdict which corresponds to the requisitions of the public ministry for Roger Hilaire and Dany Francis. The jurors, on the other hand, were more severe than the general counsel for Fabian Chérubin for a sentence of 30 years in prison had been requested.
A particular sentence since even if Roger Hilaire and Dany Francis are in the hands of French justice, their non-extradition to France for the murder of the optician offered them the possibility of not being present at their trial. They are also not required to carry out the sentence pronounced today by the Assize Court unless they are arrested by the authorities of their country of origin and regularly handed over to the French authorities.
In this case, they will then have the possibility of requesting a new trial at first instance. Fabian Chérubin is considered on the run and was convicted in absentia.
Roger Avril, the only indicted in this case and the only one present at the trial, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for theft of objects and concealment.
