Roger Federer: “Playing farewell with Rafa would be unique”

Will Roger Federer play once more or not? That’s the big question ahead of the start of the Laver Cup in London. The maestro already announced on Tuesday that he will not compete in a singles. On Wednesday, the outgoing tennis superstar faced the international press in a media round and announced that he would love to give his fans a goodbye gift of a doubles match with Nadal.

“Playing with Rafa would be unique. Of course I would like to play with him once more, »said Federer, but at the same time stated: «I don’t know yet whether it will work with the doubles on Friday. But that would be great and a great message for the whole tennis world and beyond.”

No rule breaking

According to the rules of the Laver Cup, each participating player should actually complete both a doubles and a singles. No problem for Laver Cup co-founder Federer: “That was my concern too, but I asked our team captain Björn Borg if it was okay if I just played a double. He gave the green light and clarified it with the ATP.”

In addition to the prospect of probably the last appearance as an active tennis professional, Federer also spoke in detail regarding his career and the last few days at the media conference. The Maestro emphasized that he was very satisfied with what had been achieved and had no regrets. “I’m very proud that I was able to stay at the top for so long,” emphasized the 41-year-old.
