Roger Federer, who announced his retirement last week, arrived in London earlier this week to prepare for the Laver Cup where he will perform, certainly only in doubles. While a press briefing is scheduled for Wednesday with the international media, the former world number one gave an interview on Swiss television where he returned to the last few weeks and his decision to end his career.
On his decision: “I felt at the beginning of the summer that my progress was not satisfactory, that my knee was not leaving me alone. At Wimbledon, I still believed in it, I thought that it might still pass. Then I received the results of a CT scan.
It wasn’t great, and there was no more progress. In a few days, I told myself that it was over. Honestly, I didn’t want to anymore. I am very relieved and happy to have had the career that I have had.”
His best memories: “There have been many. The return to Australia in 2017 (victory in 5 sets in the final once morest Nadal), Roland-Garros 2009 (victory in the final once morest Söderling), the first Wimbledon, the victory once morest Sampras in 2001 which was unreal .”
His future : “I would like to organize an exhibition with the players of my choice in the next six months. Then, I would like not to completely distance myself from this sport which has given me everything but keeping flexibility for my family”.
