The Armory Crate app is meant to solve this problem, but it often fails. A button on the left side of the screen brings up an overlay that lets you switch between gamepad, desktop or silent mode, among other things. However, in over 20 hours of testing last week, when I was in gamepad mode, the game often thought I was using the keyboard. Once the game worked well enough once I figured out which control method I was using, I started to assume that it would take time to figure out how to control each new game I played.
Ally has one very important difference from other handhelds. Since it runs Windows, there are no compatibility layers to pass through. The game is installed just like on PC. However, running the game is a completely different matter. to stress test the system doom eternal At 1080p, the native resolution of the Ally screen, in turbo mode in the Armory app. It struggled to reach 30 frames per second, and generally dipped to the borderline unplayable 15-20 fps during combat.
After a lot of fiddling, I was able to lower both system and game settings to get decent performance. These include:
- Use the Armory Overlay toggle to reduce your system’s display settings to 720p.
- decrease doom eternal‘s game resolution is 1280 x 720, as not all games follow Armory’s settings (Asus says it’s considering removing this toggle entirely to avoid confusion).
- grounding doom eternalset the graphics settings to the lowest possible option.
- ROG Ally’s Display Restricted to 60Hz with Armory Overlay Toggle
once i made each With one of the changes above, I was finally able to get to 60 fps. doom eternal, which drops to regarding 40-50 fps during combat. It’s not amazing performance, but at least it’s playable. But if any Performance plummeted when these changes were not made. 720p on medium graphics settings or 1080p on low settings still struggled to stay at 30 fps.
UI jank also showed its face while reaching for a viable setting. I tried using the Armory overlay toggle to switch the screen from 120Hz to 60Hz and this broke. doom eternalgraphic settings. The game resets to 4:3 aspect ratio and 640 x 480 resolution. Reading menus to correct this on a small screen will strain your eyes. This is obviously not a big deal for low load games, for example. Stardew Valley. However, Asus places particular emphasis on Ally’s ability to play AAA games. Because no other handheld can do without huge compromises.

But even playing simpler games wasn’t that simple. AMD’s new Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor is theoretically more powerful than a Steam Deck. Running Windows, however, seems to bog down to the point where this advantage becomes an issue. This is most evident when it comes to battery issues.
Rog Ally uses the same 40Wh battery as the Steam Deck. Simplified to the extreme, you can run a game that draws 40 watts for 1 hour or 5 watts for 8 hours. You usually don’t have to think regarding the power consumption of your system, but most PC games aren’t designed to take hardware into account like Ally.
