Playing with different objects is perfect for including physical activity and exercise in a dog’s daily routine, but it is also an opportunity to exercise their mind and improve their behavior. The canine behavior specialist Rodrigo Arenas explains how to educate dogs through activities with toys, in this episode of Educating Herds.
What are the best toys for dogs?
When choosing the best toy for a dog, characteristics such as the age, stage, size and weight of the dog must be taken into account. For example, a Puppy needs soft toys to satisfy his instinct to bite and not damage his milk teeth, while strengthening his jaw.
On the other hand, the right ball for each breed depends on the size of its muzzle. The Royal Veterinary School of Madrid recommends that the toy be large enough to prevent choking and additionally that it be made with natural and resistant materials.
Another option is rope pulls, but they must be used with supervision, since if they break or loose fibers, dogs can swallow them. For this reason, the material of the toy is also important, since some can be toxic or dangerous and therefore it is better to purchase them specially designed for dogs.
According to information published in the magazine Applied Animal Behavior Science, due to the high level of energy and strength they have, large dogs are inclined towards rubber or vinyl toys. Wind-up toys are not recommended for them, as they can quickly damage them.
