RockTech Lithium has provided an update on the current developments of its projects in Guben (Spree-Neisse district) and Georgia Lake, Canada. Details include funding strategies, building permit progress and sustainability goals.
The lithium hydroxide converter project in Guben
According to RockTech Lithium, construction of the lithium hydroxide monohydrate converter in Guben started in March 2023. The facility has undergone three engineering studies, with the Front-End Loading Stage 3 study (FEL3) being the most recent. “Test pile and load testing has been completed and geostatic modeling results are expected in the next few weeks,” the company said. Final approval to construct and operate the converter is expected to be granted in Q4 2023, with production scheduled for Q3 2025.
The Company states that it has prepared supply and equipment contracts including the pyrometallurgical package and the hydrometallurgical package. The selection of an EPCM contractor is almost complete and the city of Guben has closed a tender for a rail connection to the site.
LEAG wants to cooperate with Rock Tech
The companies LEAG and Rock Tech Lithium will cooperate with each other in the future. In a joint declaration of intent, they have put the focus on green energy and technology. As the energy company LEAG announced, possible plans might include getting hydrogen from LEAG’s “GigawattFactory” for the lithium refinery in Guben. The construction of an electrolyser at the site would also be conceivable. In a first step, it is now to be examined how photovoltaic systems for green electricity supply might be set up on the roof areas of Rock Tech’s converter. In the future, too, the aim is to pull together when it comes to securing skilled workers. ->> Continue reading
Approval and Funding Process
The approval procedure in Germany allows for a single approval for the construction, commissioning and operation of the plant. RockTech Lithium mentions that the first part of the permit covering all civil, infrastructure and underground works was received in March 2023.
Regarding the funding, RockTech states: “The company expects to receive around 450 million euros in debt from prominent European banks”. Deutsche Bank has been commissioned to secure 350 million euros in equity and subsidies for the converter.
Sustainability efforts and other projects
RockTech’s goal is to become the world’s first closed lithium company. The company emphasizes its efforts to responsibly source and recycle lithium products. It is also noted that external assessments project the conversion plant’s CO2 emissions to be 30% below the industry average.
Regarding future projects, the Company announces that it has begun planning for an additional converter and is considering sites in the northern United States and Ontario, Canada.
Georgia Lake: An Integrated Approach
The Georgia Lake Project in Canada, according to the Company, contains over 40% of the published mineral resources in the Thunder Bay District. It is noted that the project has made significant progress over the past few months and the intention is to extend the mine life through a series of exploration programs.
With the latest updates, RockTech Lithium underscores its efforts to expand in the lithium sector in both Europe and North America.
