Rockstar is asking developers working on GTA 6 to return to the office five days a week as the highly anticipated sequel enters its final stages of development.
According to the received Bloomberg According to a letter from Rockstar’s head of publishing Jenn Kolb, the studio plans to have GTA 6 developers return to the office starting in April for “productivity” and “safety” reasons. The latter was almost certainly partly a response to the massive leak of GTA 6 materials in September 2022, when more than 90 videos and images from a very early build appeared on the Internet prematurely. It cost Rockstar $5 million and thousands of hours of employee time, and the hacker was imprisoned for life in a maximum security mental hospital. And recently, the day before the show, a GTA 6 trailer leaked online.
Regarding productivity, Kolb wrote in an email that Rockstar saw “tangible benefits” from working in an office.
Taking these steps now will put us in the best position to release the next Grand Theft Auto at the level of quality it requires…
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, “employees are not happy” with Rockstar’s decision.
GTA 6 is planned for 2025 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (a PC version has not even been announced yet). The sequel will return players to the sun-drenched streets of Vice City, and Rockstar promises that the game will “push the boundaries of what is possible” in the open world of the game.
