This is information that falls out of nowhere, but which is terribly pleasing. The Remedy studio has just announced that it has reached an agreement with Rockstar Games (GTA, Red Dead) to develop remakes of Max Payne (2001) and Max Payne 2 (2004) on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC .
This is the first time that the two studios have collaborated together since the takeover of the Max Payne license by Rockstar Games in the 2000s. The project seems ambitious and is already the dream of many early fans!
Max Payne is back in 4K
It was through an official press release on its website that Remedy announced the news. The information was relayed by our colleagues at Rockstar Mag’, we learn that these remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2 are part of Remedy’s major projects with a budget worthy of the studio’s AAA games (like Control, Quantum Break or even Alan Wake 2).
At the moment, we don’t know much regarding the project. Remedy thus announced the following points:
- The studio will take care of the development of both games
- These will be stand-alone titles (independent of each other)
- Rockstar Games is funding the project
- The remakes will run on the graphics engine of Remedy: the Northlight (the engine of Control and Alan Wake 2)
- The games are expected on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC
- Substantial budget, worthy of triple A games
- The project is currently in the concept phase (so active development has not started yet)
We should therefore not expect to find Max at the end of 2022 or in 2023. Currently, Remedy is developing the highly anticipated Alan Wake 2 which is scheduled for 2023. These two remakes might therefore arrive in 2024 , right to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Max Payne 2.
