DENVER – Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner suffered a fractured skull and concussion Saturday night when he was hit by a line drive from Phillies’ Nick Castellanos, manager Bud Black revealed Sunday.
Feltner was able to text with Black and his teammates the night of, which eased some of the concern, Black said.
“What we found out was that he has a small skull fracture and he has a concussion … but overall, he’s fine,” Black added. “The feeling is that it might have been worse, obviously. But he’s going to lose some time.”
“Ryan was texting the players, so he was pretty steady when the game ended and the guys were getting home around midnight. He also shared text messages with our medical staff, with his parents, and we texted last night. He obviously had a concussion, but he was pretty lucid.”
The fracture did not require surgery, Black said, so it will be a matter of rest and time to heal. Doctors have assured Feltner that the fracture will heal.
“The most important thing is that you have to let the trauma pass and let nature take its course,” Black said. “She has suffered a head injury. Time is the best healer. From everything I’ve been told here this morning, things are looking up.”
Black said Feltner might visit the stadium on Monday or Tuesday.
Right-handed reliever Riley Pint was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday to take Feltner’s place on the active roster. How the Rockies will adjust the rotation remains to be determined.
