Gass, the Hollywood star’s bandmate, said, “Don’t miss Trump next time“as he expressed his birthday wish in front of a cake brought to him during Tenacious D’s concert in Sydney on Sunday, according to an excerpt of the incident broadcast Wednesday by Australian public broadcaster ABC.
His comments came just hours following Trump was assassinated on Saturday night in Pennsylvania as he faces a bid for the US presidential election in November.
The assassination attempt left two people dead, including the attacker, while a bullet pierced the former president’s left ear.
“I would never approve of hate speech“
The remembered protagonist of the film School of Rock or the animated saga Kung Fu Panda wrote last night on his Instagram account, with more than 14.3 million followers, that “would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.”
The joke was “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” Gass admitted for his part, in a message on Instagram.
““I do not condemn violence of any kind, what happened is a tragedy and I am incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment. I deeply apologize to those I have disappointed and I am truly sorry for any pain we have caused.” he added.
Tour organisers also provided details yesterday of refunds for tickets sold for the remaining six concerts in Australia and New Zealand, while United Australia Party Senator Ralph Babet, a conservative, yesterday called in a statement for the band’s deportation.
