ROC President Stanislav Pozdnyakov made important statements on the main sporting event of the four-year anniversary.
The decision on the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games was the main topic both in our country and in the West. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) tried to please everyone, but the result was extremely ridiculous and unconvincing.
As a result, today it has finally become clear that the Russian team as such will definitely not be at the Games in the capital of France, and neutral athletes will have to determine their fate independently, without reference to the state.
Is the question definitely closed?
Perhaps there is no more pressing issue in our sport than participation or non-participation in the Paris Olympics. The head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, has long been tired of everyone with contradictory actions and statements regarding Russian athletes. Words regarding the inadmissibility of discrimination based on nationality run counter to the humiliating requirements for admission to international competitions.
Last December, the IOC still allowed Russians to come to Paris 2024 in a neutral status. The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), in turn, took a wait-and-see approach, without cutting off the opportunity for our athletes to perform. A month ago in February, Russian Presidential Aide Igor Levitin said that Vladimir Putin had instructed the Ministry of Sports and R&D to prepare proposals for the presence of Russians at the Olympic Games.
Today in Moscow a meeting of the executive committee of the ROC was held, following which the head of the organization Stanislav Pozdnyakov made a number of important statements. He emphasized that the Russian national team, in the classical sense, will not be at the 2024 Games, so the ROC will actually not be able to protect those individual athletes who still decide to go to Paris in a neutral status under the IOC’s conditions.
— From the point of view of our lawyers, in accordance with the charter, the ROC is responsible and protects the interests of the Russian Olympic team. Neutral athletes do not fall under this concept in any way. Therefore, I doubt that we will continue to discuss the issue of participation in the Olympics at the official level,” Match TV quotes Pozdnyakov.

There will be no boycott
The last phrase of the ROC president drew the line. This is the end. Now one hundred percent. Of course, this was read between the lines before; no global sensation occurred. Nevertheless, this issue is finally closed. Essentially, neutral athletes are left to their own devices. Officially, the ROC cannot help or support them, because this also threatens to violate the laws of the country.
— Conditions of conduct in the Olympic Games will be determined, which will be in strict accordance with the principles that were voiced at the December IOC Executive Committee. Athletes must condemn the SVO and sign some other documents that, from the point of view of the legal department of the ROC, may lead to a violation of Russian law,” Pozdnyakov confirmed.
At the same time, despite everything that is happening, Pozdnyakov said that there will be no calls for a boycott of the Olympics from the Russian side.
— ROC has never engaged in a boycott of the Olympic Games and events; we always support the participation of Russian Olympians on exclusively non-discriminatory conditions. Unfortunately, Paris 2024 cannot provide Russian athletes with equal conditions, so the question arises regarding the injustice of such conditions,” Pozdnyakov concluded.
The IOC, with its inhuman demands, threatens the freedom of every Russian athlete who has the desire to compete in Paris. And in the end, Russia will still be blamed, because it refused to kneel before the hypocritical and insolent West. At least now the rules of the game are clear to our athletes, and in case of unpleasant consequences of participation in the Games they will only have themselves to blame.
