The Italian Institute of Technology (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia) is developing an innovative humanoid robot, equipped with a jetpack, to intervene in emergency situations. The goal is to create a machine capable of moving in difficult environments, where traditional drones or human teams struggle to access.

The project is based on the robot iCubinitially designed for the research in artificial intelligence. The researchers modified this bipedal robot by adding a jetpack equipped with two engines jet-powered, to enable it to fly.

Nicknamed iRonCub3this robot is also equipped with turbines instead of its hands, capable of generating a thrust of 1,000 newtons, the equivalent of a force applied by a 100 kg person. Turbine exhaust temperatures reach up to 600 °C, requiring a reinforced structure, with a spine made of titanium and a heat-resistant coating heat.

The development of theiRonCub3 not limited to design mechanical. The team worked on complex algorithms for the control of flight and walking, by integrating neural networks capable of processing data real-time thermodynamics.

Force and torque sensors were installed on the jetpack, and a depth camera was placed on the robot’s chest to optimize its orientation in space. Wind tunnel simulations have already been carried out to validate these aerodynamic models.

Although the robot has not yet made its first real flight, the researchers are optimistic and hope for a takeoff soon. Their ambition is to create a machine capable of flying over a disaster area, collecting information, then landing to assist rescuers on the ground, opening doors, crossing obstacles or even climbing stairs.

This type of robot could also be useful for inspection missions of buildings or dangerous infrastructures.

The project presents significant challenges, particularly due to the complexity of the propulsion systems and the risks associated with experimental testing. However, the team remains confident in the ability of theiRonCub3 to become a actor key in rescue interventions in difficult environments.
