The entrepreneur Roberto Bertazzoni, protagonist of the industrial epic that led Smeg (Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla) founded by his father Vittorio in 1948 to become a multinational in the household appliances sector, has died at the age of 81 in Parma. The funeral will take place on Tuesday 2 April, at 11.30 am, in the Cathedral of Guastalla (Reggio Emilia), the city where he was born on 10 December 1942. He leaves his wife Maria Rita Gandolfi and his son Vittorio, today at the helm of Smeg, which has around 2,600 employees and generates a turnover of over 900 million euros.
Roberto Bertazzoni, appointed Cavaliere del Lavoro by the President of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro in 1993, following graduating in Economics and Commerce, joined the family company Smeg in the early 1970s, subsequently taking on the roles of president and managing director. Under his leadership, based on an entrepreneurial formula that combined management attention to quality, innovation, technology and product style, Smeg has recorded a trend of constant economic development over the years.
Roberto Bertazzoni has served on the boards of directors of Mediobanca, RCS Media Group and Unicredit. To the important results achieved in the household appliances sector, Smeg has associated and consolidated it with a significant industrial and commercial dimension also in sectors such as catering and electro-medical equipment. The growing awareness of the brand and the positive commercial feedback on the domestic and international markets are the result of the constant effort towards that distinctive evolution of the product which, together with a particularly rich range, constitutes a factor in Smeg’s success and competitive capacity.
