The Australian Robert Stannard is suspected of violating anti-doping rules by the International Cycling Union (UCI), his Alpecin-Deceuninck team confirmed on Wednesday. The UCI provisionally suspended the rider for “use of prohibited methods and/or substances“.

The facts would go back to 2018 and 2019 when the rider wore the colors of the Mitchelton-Scott team. He has only joined Alpecin since 2022.”We respect the decision of the UCI and we will comply with it. In the meantime, we will continue to inform ourselves of the rider, his management and the UCI“, specifies the Belgian team.

The rider reacted through his management office: “I was informed by the UCI that I violated the anti-doping rules more than four years ago. I have never intentionally used a prohibited substance and therefore I will request that my case be referred to the doping tribunal. I can’t wait to present my defense and I’m confident that I can continue my career as usual. I will respect the confidentiality of the proceedings and therefore make no further comments.“Stannard, 24, has a professional success: the Tour de Wallonie in 2022.

He took 2nd place in the ranking of the best climber in the last Vuelta and also finished 6th in the Flèche Brabançonne in 2021. He was due to participate in the Glasgow Worlds which begins on Thursday.
