What inspired Robert ⁢Eggers to revisit the classic ⁢ tale of “Nosferatu” after ⁤his success with “The‌ Witch” and “The Lighthouse”?

Archyde ⁢Exclusive Interview:‍ Robert Eggers⁢ on⁤ His Visionary ‍”Nosferatu”‍ (2024)

Archyde News Editor: Hello, Robert.Thank you for taking ‌the time to ⁢speak ⁣to us ‌today.

Robert Eggers (RE): Thank you for⁣ having me. I’m always excited to discuss my work.

Archyde: ⁤Your ”Nosferatu” ⁢(2024) ‌has been a labor of love, spanning decades of fascination with the genre. What‍ drew you to this classic tale after masterfully reimagining other horror tales like “The Witch” and ⁤”The‍ Lighthouse”?

RE: Well, “nosferatu” is a⁣ foundational⁣ text‍ in the genre. It’s an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s ‍”Dracula,” but it’s more than that. It’s a ‍silent German Expressionist film ‌that amplified the uncanny, ‍the grotesque, and ‌the surreal. ‍It’s a film that⁣ scared me as a ‌teenager, and I’ve been obsessed with it⁤ ever since. I felt a deep‌ duty to ‍honor that original while adding my own unique take.

Archyde: That responsibility must have been‍ immense, given “Nosferatu”‘s iconic status. How did⁤ you approach ⁢updating‍ a⁤ silent film for modern audiences?

RE: I wanted to respect the original and its⁤ visual language, ‌but also give it a‌ fresh⁣ coat of paint. I socialized with the script, constantly asks: what‍ will make this relevant to modern ‌audiences? What can ⁣I ⁤bring to the ⁤table that’s new and unexpected? I landed on a story that leans harder into atmosphere, ⁤dread, and‍ suspense,‍ while also exploring themes ⁣that resonate today.

Archyde: The official ⁣poster⁤ alone seems to hint at that eerie atmosphere. Tell us about your vision for Count Orlok this time around.

RE: I didn’t want him to be the same ⁤old suave, seductive ⁤vampire ⁢we’ve seen a hundred times. I wanted⁤ a creature that‌ looks like ‌he’s rotting‌ from the inside, a manifestation of decay and⁢ disease. Working with Bill Skarsgård was a dream. He’s a ‌dedicated actor who truly ‍committed to the physicality of the role. We watched tons of nature documentaries⁤ of ‍animals and insects, studied dissection videos to ⁢understand ⁤the body in decay.

Archyde: ⁣The work put into the ⁤design and creation of Count Orlok was ‍meticulous, according to behind-the-scenes glimpses.⁢ How did you ensure ‍his design stayed true to the spirit of the original while being fresh and terrifying?

RE: That’s a delicate balance. I wanted to‍ pay homage to Max phylogenetic’s iconic design from⁣ the 1922 film, but also evolve it. I ‌looked at old engravings and⁣ woodcuts ⁣from the 18th and 19th centuries depicting vampires, mocked up ⁣various designs, and tested them out. We landed on ⁢somthing‍ that has‍ that historic feel, but also something… extraterrestrial.

Archyde: The film has been ‌met with critical acclaim, standing out among other ‍2024 horror releases like “Longlegs” and “Smile 2”. How does⁤ that feel?

RE: It’s truly humbling. the horror community has been incredibly supportive, and to see my name in the same sentence ‍as lenora Crichlow and‌ Timothée Chalamet’s work is surreal.I owe it all to the talented team I have the privilege of working with.

Archyde: ⁣Lastly,‍ Robert, what do you hope ⁢audiences take away from “Nosferatu” (2024)?

RE: ⁣I hope they feel unsettled. I hope ‍they leave the theater ⁤thinking about shadows a little ⁢differently, ⁤maybe questioning the calmness ⁤of a moonlit‍ night.⁤ I want them ⁢to feel the weight ⁣of ancient, ‌untold horrors lurking just beyond the ⁣edge of ⁢our perception. Mostly, I hope ‍they have fun. Because even in‍ the darkest places, there can be⁤ beauty… and ⁣terror.

Archyde: Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Robert.”Nosferatu” (2024) is now available for purchase and rental via PVOD. We highly recommend ⁤audiences experience it for themselves.

RE: Thank ‍you. I hope they love it.
