Robert Downey Jr. and his historic return as Doctor Doom, Marvel’s most iconic villain seeks to save the MCU

“New mask, same mission,” was how Robert Downey Jr. opened his social media post confirming his role as Doctor Doom at Marvel Studios. The popular actor’s return to the MCU was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con with a revelation that sent viewers into a frenzy, removing his character’s mask and confirming to everyone that one of the most important figures in Marvel’s film history is returning to bring the company back to the top.

Robert Downey Jr. will be Victor Von Doom himself, and his entrance is everything for a Marvel Studios that was not able to find the necessary focus for the new direction of ‘The Avengers’, but will now feature the actor as the villain in ‘The Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘The Avengers: Secret Wars’.

A return that seeks to save the UCM and take it back to the top

Robert Downey Jr. was a hugely important figure in the role of Iron Man in establishing the Marvel Cinematic Universe and helping it reach the levels of popularity it achieved. Now, with a problematic time and the company not finding the right key, his return shows the possibilities of reinvention that Marvel Studios can offer, and it does so with none other than the one who for many is the most charismatic and mythical villain of all.

San Diego Comic-Con is the world’s largest event for the entertainment industry, and especially for comics and all its aspects. It’s the ideal setting for Marvel Studios to show its most loyal fans what’s to come. Like Iron Man, Doctor Doom has one of his greatest points of power in his armor, and like Tony Stark, he’s extremely intelligent, so he seems to be a role tailor-made for Robert Downey Jr.
