This Monday, Robert de Niro told a journalist that he had just welcomed a little girl. An extremely late paternity, which is not insignificant according to Dr. Ghada Hatem, gynecologist-obstetrician.

And 7! At the age of 79, actor Robert De Niro became a father for the 7th time. It would be a little girl, answering the name of Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro. If the parents are in heaven, several studies warn of the risks generated by this extremely late paternity. The point on the question.

The little girl was born on April 6

It was during an interview with the media ET Canada that the 79-year-old actor made this revelation. While the journalist recalled that he was the father of six children, the star corrected by declaring: “I’m seven. I just welcomed a baby“.

The information was confirmed in stride: it would be a little girl, born on April 6 and named Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro. An adorable photo of the little girl in a pink onesie is currently circulating on social networks.

If the couple is “thrilled” by the arrival of this baby who “was planned”, many experts are wondering: is it reasonable to have a child at 79? What regarding the risks to the baby?

    More risk for the baby

After a study published in 2006, any man over the age of 50 is at risk of having an autistic child (the risk is more than ten times that of a man in his twenties). And that risk doubles every decade.

Another observation, this time made by a study from 2018 : fathers over 45 years old would be 14% more likely than fathers in their twenties or thirties to have a premature baby with a low birth weight.

Finally, older fathers are more likely to have a baby with dwarfism or certain psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc.).

Elderly fathers would also put their partners at greater risk than others with complications such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes.

NO to diets, YES to WW!

“We have lived for too long with the idea that only the age of the mother counts”

Very real risks, validated by Dr. Ghada Hatem, obstetrician-gynecologist.

We have lived for too long with the idea that only the age of the mother counts, but that is not true. Many research works have shown that age is not so insignificant in the father: it can thus lead to an increase in malformations in the baby.“, warns the expert.
