Aline Murr to Asharq Al-Awsat: Turkish series “Trend”, like the former Mexican ones
Turkish series occupy a significant part of the drama shows on the Lebanese screens. It mainly emerged during the Ramadan season, so the channels adopted it instead of joint local and Arab productions, due to the difficulties of producing the first and the high purchase prices of the second.
And just as “LBCI”, “Al Jadid” and “MTV” included it on its seasonal networks, and it continued to be shown during Ramadan. Among the works presented are “Heartache”, “The Flower of the Trinity”, “The Forbidden Apple”, “Knock on My Door” and “My Brothers”. And the last three topped the “MTV” programs during the holy month, and succeeded in attracting its followers and competing with other dramas.
Al-Jadeed TV adopted this plan years ago, achieving high viewership rates in previous Ramadan seasons, as other Turkish series advanced, despite the joint and local dramatic shows shown on other screens.
Some explain the rush to buy Turkish works by talking regarding their acceptable cost first, regarding their rights, as they are sometimes accompanied by bilateral agreements that serve both parties, and the prices of one newly produced episode reach $4,000. And the more time passes on the productions, the lower its cost, reaching $ 2,000 an episode. Some agreements obtain the entire work, so the principle of wholesale prices applies to them, especially if it consists of more than one part.

Aline Murr, TV presenter and producer, has extensive experience working with Turkish actors in Lebanon. She was the first to host their most important stars in her programs on MTV, and sometimes she devoted episodes to them so that the viewer might get to know them closely. Asharq Al-Awsat asks her why the Lebanese channels, including MTV, relied heavily on showing these works, and she replied: “The (Watch) platform obtained the exclusive right to display most of the Arab and joint dramas in Ramadan, which was negatively reflected on the local channels, and it was found in Turkish drama is a way out of the impasse in which it was placed.
According to Al-Murr, “MTV” was in the process of presenting a drama produced by “Al-Sabah”, written by Claudia Marshalian, starring Karen Rizkallah and directed by Elie Al-Samaan. And because her repertoire was empty except for “For Death 3” for the Ramadan season, she intensified the Turkish drama within her network, especially as it garners high viewership rates.
And whether the Turkish series have turned into a necessity for local channels in the absence of local productions, she explains: “It is not a necessity as much as it is a (trend) that has been promoting a lot in the recent period, so we see these works shown on satellite channels such as (MBC) and others. Today, it is witnessing its golden era, as was the Mexican one before it. We cannot predict from now on the end date of this (trend) and its eclipse. As long as the Arab viewer follows it at high rates, it remains among the seasonal programmes.
The intensity of these series shows decreases in the summer season, and their luster increases in the winter. Al-Murr’s dialogues with the Turkish stars contributed to urging the viewer to follow them more. She explains: “When I started with the first meetings with Turkish actors, it was through the series (Shukurova). His performances were at their peak, and she came to complete his success on the screen. I didn’t invent gunpowder when I thought of it, but I was the first to do it. People like to go behind the scenes of the implementation of a dramatic work and get to know its characters away from their roles in the series. The viewer interacted greatly with the encounters with the heroes (Shukurova), and then the stars of (The Forbidden Apple) and (My Brothers).
Turkish works are not similar in composition to Arab ones
Arab viewers in general, and Lebanese viewers in particular, are attracted to Turkish drama for several reasons. Despite the lack of great resemblance between them and our societies, this audience identifies with its events and awaits them with enthusiasm. The first was Al-Ghaith with the series “Fatima” and “Sultan Suleiman”.
Al-Murr points out that the process of filming these series does not take place in the same way as in the Arab world. Its producers film each episode in its entirety, separately. They are awaiting its presentation to write the next episode, and within specific directions. He said: “This surprised me. They build each episode according to the success or failure of the previous one. Depending on what you harvest, the next one is written, using the strongest axis. The script is not complete from the start of implementation, nor do the actors know in advance the filming dates. Therefore, I was surprised by changing the dates of meetings with this or that actor because of the change in the course of the story.
Regarding the reason for the success of the Turkish drama and its follow-up by the Lebanese, Al-Murr says: “It is due to combined artistic elements. They rely on real-life stories and high-level imaging technology. What is remarkable regarding them is the huge number of stars and actors, so they renew themselves away from any possible consumption. This is what attracts the viewer and prompts him to attach himself to professional actors, even if they are seeing them for the first time.
