“Roaming Around – The Art and Science of Walking in the 21st Century”

2023-04-22 08:57:18

Roaming around, as aimlessly as possible, as a flâneuse or idler, allowing thoughts to arise, spinning them out, discarding them: the ancient Greeks recognized the potential of walking. Aristotle liked to think while walking in his so-called Peripatetic School (from Peripatos, the foyer), there was always the opportunity to pick up new ideas “along the way” or to enrich old thoughts with oxygen. But does that still exist in this fast, often machine-driven world of locomotion of the 21st century? Oh yes, and the longing for it is great – this is shown by many new publications that encourage people to walk, in rubber boots or hiking boots, barefoot or in flip-flops, alone or in a group. It’s regarding health, curiosity and departure, finding new paths and paths that arise when walking or leaving old tracks that have been used in everyday life.

In Diagonal we have roamed around a lot over the decades in the city with idlers and flaneurs, through the mountains with nature experts and those hungry for exercise. For this show we take a few excursions out of their stillness in the archive, take a philosophizing stroll through the grounds and accompany contemporary and historical walking enthusiasts through town and country. Come with me?

We had to postpone the program on plants that was scheduled for this week for production reasons. New broadcast date: June 17, 2023
