Road works continue to improve connectivity of indigenous communities in Chaco

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Government, through the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, continues with the improvement works on the interconnection section between the indigenous communities of Yakye Axa and Kelyenmagategma, in the Paraguayan Chaco. Currently, the cellular sewers are being completed on the access section to the Xakmok Kasek community.

The intervention covers from kilometer 10.4 to 33.4 on the Pozo Colorado – Concepción stretch and includes the construction of a reservoir requested by leader Aníbal de Yakye Axa, 10 km from the urban center of the community. This reservoir was filled with the recent rains, benefiting the local population.

The work is being carried out by District No. 15 of the MOPC, to connect Yakye Axa with Kelyenmagategma, also known as Karajá Vuelta, located on the banks of the Paraguay River and which until now lacked road access.

At the same time, the Rutas del Norte Consortium is carrying out improvement work on the first 33 kilometers of access, with an investment of G. 8,251,616,824, financed by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).

This work is crucial to comply with the measures imposed by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) ruling and is of deep public interest due to its direct social impact and its political and diplomatic implications.

The Yakye Axa community, belonging to the Enxet People, is made up of some 60 families (more than 300 people) who have lived for decades on the side of the PY05 Pozo Colorado – Concepción route, in the department of Presidente Hayes.

The project not only demonstrates the Government’s commitment to fulfilling international obligations, but also highlights the determination to improve access and quality of life for historically marginalized populations.
