Deputy Prime Minister Geneviève Guilbault, who is betting on comedian Katherine Levac as part of a new road safety awareness campaign, assures us that “never once more” will she forget to wear her seat belt in the car.

Surrounded by elementary school students who were putting the finishing touches to a fresco painted on the roadway in front of the Fernand-Séguin school in Quebec City, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility unveiled Wednesday the main lines of the campaign “The road safety, I’m on board”, for which Katherine Levac will be spokesperson.

A week following the publication, in the pages of the Journal, of several photos showing her without a seat belt, Ms. Guilbault recalled that even politicians must attach themselves.

” Never once more “

“Thanks to you, never, never, never once more will I forget to put on my seatbelt.” This is the good news, ”she quipped, answering questions from journalists.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who says she has “spent a lot of time” in the field since the affair hit the headlines, in particular because of the by-election in Jean-Talon, admitted that several citizens have spoken to her regarding it once more. .

“A lot of little winks, I would say, overall, quite friendly, emphatic. People understand that these are oversights. I think it is no less reprehensible for all that, I want to be absolutely very, very clear on this, ”said Ms. Guilbault, who apologized shortly following the publication of the photos in question, last week.

A new voice for road safety

With a budget of $6 million, the “Road safety, I’m on board” campaign will rely on humor to encourage drivers to slow down in school zones.

Different from the shock advertisements to which the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has accustomed us, this major campaign will be available in the form of video capsules, in particular.

“I think that with humor, authenticity, I think that by remaining myself, (…) I trust that these capsules will have a real impact,” said Ms. Levac.

“I wanted a new face for road safety, who will be able to pick up people while being fundamentally and then sincerely sensitive to the cause,” explained Ms. Guilbault, pointing out that the comedian is also the mother of two young people. children.

The deployment of this awareness campaign is part of the measures included in the 2023-2028 Road Safety Action Plan made public on August 22.

Accidents around educational institutions resulted in 3 deaths, 38 serious injuries and 1,334 minor injuries, from 2018 to 2022.
