Road Rehabilitation on E411: Sofico’s Answer to Traffic Jams and Poor Conditions

2023-10-03 05:57:50

We are talking here regarding the one going from Daussoulx to Thorembais-Saint-Trond. This is due to the poor condition of the middle strip and the left strip. They must be replaced. Sofico answers all our questions… Traffic jams, once more and once more… – RG By Pierre Nizet Journalist in the General Editorial team Published on 06/09/2023 at 06:22 Modified on 06/09/2023 at 11:45

Is the E411 a cursed highway? Let’s just say that, given his age, it was time to give him a good makeover. To know the state of bridges and highways in Germany, let’s say that we are almost in the same boat as our neighbors.

Many of you complain regarding the long minutes lost in the miles of work that are currently ruining your daily life. Rest assured, we are in the same boat.

We contacted Sofico this Tuesday. Its spokesperson, Héloïse Winandy, would first like to point out that there are different types of sites: “Maintenance sites (brushing of water streams, cleaning of drains, waste collection, maintenance of vegetation , localized coating repairs, etc.) which can last from a few hours to a few days. Rehabilitation projects, which may involve rehabilitation of the upper layers of the coatings (to extend the lifespan of the road structure, when its condition allows) or which may consist of completely “rebuilding” a road. These last projects are obviously the longest.”

Different types of projects, with different durations and objectives, must therefore be carried out simultaneously on the network to ensure safety, comfort and fluidity. “One of our biggest challenges remains to carry out our projects while maintaining maximum mobility. Concerning maintenance work (such as brushing water streams, cleaning drains, mowing, etc.) which require the removal of a traffic lane, they must be carried out outside peak hours and in certain areas, it is simply prohibited (except in cases of imperative emergency) from intervening during the day.” Many materials are impossible to use in winter, which obviously includes the period of rehabilitation projects over the rest of the year.

Let’s start at the bottom, on the side of the province of Luxembourg. Good news: the Stockem construction site is finished. The direction towards Brussels was released on August 26 and that towards the Grand Duchy was released on August 30.

Going back up, you will inevitably come across the first pitfall: the repair site between Transinne and Verlaine, i.e. almost 19 km, only in the direction of Namur but this impacts both directions. The upper layers of the motorway surface will be treated over its entire width (emergency lane, right and left lanes) and concrete repairs will be carried out locally. There will be two phases: from mid-August until October 6; and following winter 2023, to spring 2024. The latter should last regarding a month.

300 meters to Wellin

Bad news for this Wednesday: an emergency intervention must be carried out. “It follows an accident and a loss of truck oil which damaged the E411 near Wellin (BK 103). An intervention will be necessary over approximately 300 meters towards Brussels to replace the covering over 4 cm. Only one lane will be available at this location throughout the day.”

On the Courrière side, things are stuck. – R.G.

Then, near Courrière, but towards Luxembourg, there is maintenance work which aims to carry out localized repairs. This project should have been completed but it will finally be completed by September 15. “The interventions to be carried out turned out to be more important than expected.”

We go back: there is this famous rehabilitation project between Daussoulx and Thorembais-Saint-Trond. Greater damage than expected was noted on the middle and left lanes between Daussoulx and Thorembais-Saint-Trond in the direction of Brussels. They will therefore have to be completely rebuilt. “In order to avoid impacting the second phase of work relating to the rehabilitation of the tracks towards Namur, the work will continue this winter 2023 by laying continuous reinforced concrete”. The current traffic conditions will therefore remain in effect until spring 2024, when the second phase will begin!

Until Friday September 29, interchange no. 12 “Eghezée” will be closed to traffic towards Brussels. “For users traveling on the E411 towards Brussels and wishing to leave the motorway, a diversion is in place via interchange no. 11 “Gembloux”. Users traveling on the N912 and wishing to access the E411 towards Brussels are diverted via the N4 and the N29.

A beautiful diamond

And that’s not all… there is a new construction site which has just started near the E411. This concerns the development of the diamond interchange at the N4-N25-E411 crossroads in Mont-Saint-Guibert. The installation of signage was announced for this Monday, September 4. This was indeed the case: “the provisional markings allowing the demarcation of the signaling lanes were drawn this Monday and finalized this Tuesday morning. The rest of the signage was installed the same day.” There should be no impact on the highway as part of this project, we are told… but we will have to see if it does not get stuck at exit 9.

One last one to finish? This concerns Flanders. On the Overijse side, for a few hundred meters towards Wavre, there are three narrowed lanes (with a speed limit of 70 km/h) due to a construction site carried out along the emergency lane. Trees (many) have been cut down but nothing has happened for at least a week…

Drivers have the impression that mobile radars are now less present on the roads, because of the network of section radars and fixed boxes. They are wrong, unfortunately for their wallets…

This is particularly the case of Bruno, a reader from Walloon Brabant, who scrutinized the surroundings of the works on the E411 towards Namur. “Coyote warned me of a mobile radar, but I never saw it. It must have been a mistake.” “No, he was there. It was a little tripod out of the way,” comments Pierre, a colleague who knows the place well. Bruno asked us if the police were not abandoning mobile radars because of the proliferation of section radars.

“No, we are still receiving as many questions from customers and maintenance contracts are continuing as normal,” says Pierre Grisard of SecuRoad, the company which markets a range of widely used radars. And the new orders? “We occasionally sell a mobile radar to a local police force, but what works well at the moment is the removable radar head for fixed boxes. With accessories, it can be temporarily transformed into a mobile radar. notes the manufacturer.

“Section radars represent the future because they control longer distances and have greater social support. But other types of radar still have a role to play,” analyzes Benoît Godart of the Vias Institute. For him, fixed boxes must focus on very specific places, such as certain turns or downhill straight lines. “As for mobile radars, they demonstrate to drivers that they can be controlled outside of announced zones. Speed in their neighborhood is the first thing Belgians complain regarding,” underlines the Vias spokesperson.

Up to ten sites per day

“With current technology, mobile speed cameras are less detectable. This is perhaps why your reader has the impression that there are fewer of them,” adds Benoît Godart. “Indeed, they no longer have a flash,” says David Quinaux of the Charleroi police. “We have four mobiles and we use them intensively. Some days, we check up to ten sites, staying for a maximum of an hour each time,” our interlocutor continues. If some of the speed checks are announced on social networks, the Carolo police are very discreet when operating. “Mobile radars on tripods are too visible. We use on-board radars, sometimes under the tailgate, in unmarked cars. They can verbalize from the front or from behind. We also have a trash radar,” describes David Quinaux. The tripods do not collect dust: “We use them during prevention campaigns, like the one that will begin in zone 30.”

The mobile radar also keeps the rating in the Boraine area. “It allows us to respond to requests from citizens who complain regarding speed near their homes. If the traffic analysis shows that this is indeed the case, we place a mobile,” explains Bertrand Caroy, traffic manager. Controls are also mentioned in advance. They are carried out discreetly, but remain visible to attentive people. “The goal is not to trap,” assures Bertrand Caroy. In the Arches area (Andenne), we also play the discretion card with an unmarked vehicle. There is no question of giving up on mobile radar either. On the contrary, “The increase in the number of fixed and section radars connected to the CRT of the federal police in Perex allows us to have more time with the mobile to control more isolated or rural places at the request of local residents”, welcomes Jean-Michel Tubetti, the zone manager.
