This is an observation that might be drawn from the latest Vias Road Safety Barometer. While Wallonia is less populated than Flanders, it has exactly the same number of road deaths over the first nine months of 2023: 134 deaths in each region. These are people who died at the scene of the accident. The number of victims who died in hospital has not yet been taken into account.

Beyond this equality between the North and the South, Vias notes that 63 of the 134 killed in Wallonia were killed in Hainaut, or 47% of the Walloon total. For comparison, the province of Liège only deplores 30 deaths.

“This is also the first time that someone has been killed in an accident with an electric scooter in Wallonia. It was in Liège. In addition, 18 people lost their lives across the country with an electric bike. This number is the highest ever recorded for the first nine months of a year,” notes Benoît Godart.
