Thiruvananthapuram: Fines will be levied for violations detected through road cameras from June 5. Earlier it was decided to collect fine from 20th of this month. But the new decision is to continue issuing the warning notice for one more month. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting of the transport department to set up the road camera. At the same time, it was not decided whether to give concessions when children are accompanied by their parents.
The road camera project was inaugurated by the Chief Minister on 20th of last month, but it was intended to create awareness without imposing fines until 19th. In the meantime, allegations of corruption and further controversy arose in the installation of the camera. There was also a widespread demand for relaxation of the provision that a child below 12 years of age riding a two-wheeler would have to pay the fine imposed when 3 people are traveling.
There was also a demand to avoid fines for children traveling with their parents. In this regard, the Transport Department initially explained that the provisions of the Central Act should be relaxed, but the decision is being extended to the state government itself bringing this relaxation.
Principal Secretary A. P. M. Muhammad Hanish will submit a report to the Industries Department on Thursday, studying whether there is any irregularity in awarding the contract for the camera project. The CEO of Bengaluru’s SRIT company, which subcontracted the contract, is meeting the media in Thiruvananthapuram today to explain the controversy.
