Sixty-seven people died and 949 others were injured, as a result of 736 road accidents that occurred in Zaire, from January to December 2023, according to data from the Provincial Command of the National Police made public yesterday
Compared to the same period in 2022, there was an increase of 167 road accidents, the main causes of which were recklessness, lack of knowledge and disregard for the Highway Code, especially by motorcyclists using taxi services. This information is contained in the final communiqué of the advisory council of the Zaire Provincial Command of the National Police (PN), which was guided by its head, Commissioner Firmino Uyamba.
According to Angop, participants in the PN advisory council also concluded that there were other causes of road accidents: the consumption of alcoholic beverages by drivers, excessive crowding and speed and the lack of horizontal and vertical signage on the roads.
On the other hand, the Police registered 1,852 crimes of a different nature, 147 fewer cases compared to last year, with 1,471 crimes being resolved. In relation to fuel smuggling into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), participants defended the need to reinforce control and inspection mechanisms in the petroleum derivatives marketing chain by licensed agents in the region, in order to effectively combat of the phenomenon. Illegal immigration was also among the topics discussed.
