The so-called Public Spaces Recovery Plan was carried out in seven points in the Metropolitan region that had high crime rates during the pre-pandemic years.
The Presidential Delegation of the Metropolitan Region, following an intervention carried out within the framework of the Plan for the Recovery of Public Spaces and in collaboration with the Carabineros and local governments, has managed to considerably reduce Crimes of Greater Social Connotation (DMCS).
The interventions were carried out in Barrio Meiggs, Plaza de Maipú, Plaza de Armas in San Bernardo, the Civic Center of La Florida, Plaza de Armas in Santiago, nine Metro stations and Plaza Argentina (Central Station).
According to data reported by the Police Criminal Analysis Department, the DMCS in Barrio Meiggs decreased by 36.7% compared to the pre-pandemic yearsa place where 1,881 awnings and structures have also been removed, according to information from the Municipality of Santiago.
In addition, following his intervention, the crimes of robbery, theft and injuries presented a drop of 34.5% in Plaza de Maipú and 45.5% in Plaza de San Bernardo, a sector where 300 awnings were removed.

Meanwhile, Plaza de Armas, which began its intervention between November and December 2022, to control street commerce, registered a 21% drop in crimes in its quadrant compared to the period prior to the pandemic (2019) and 24, 1% compared to 2018.
In addition, within its results, the making of 760 complaints for confiscations stands out; 645 detainees, of which 427 went to detention control; 72 seizures of weapons and 14,902 identity checks.
On the other hand, the Florida Civic Center registered a decrease in DMCS of 32% compared to 2019 and 31.8% compared to 2018.
Interventions in Santiago Metro
Regarding the Santiago Metro, whose intervention began on July 18, 2022 in nine stations, it obtained a total of 6,479 confiscated species, 7,588 preventive controls and 41 detainees, of which 37 went to detention control.
Finally, regarding Plaza Argentina, in Estación Central, its intervention began in May 2022 and contemplated police takeover, located between Exposición and San Francisco de Borja streets along the South Axis of Alameda. There, the decrease in DMCS was 26.7% compared to 2019 and 10.6% compared to 2018. A total of 600 awnings were removed.
The presidential delegate of the Metropolitan region, Constanza Martínez, declared that “the interventions carried out in seven strategic and neuralgic neighborhoods improve the safety and quality of life of more than 4 million people who pass through these spaces, thanks to the average decrease of 32.8% in the rates of Crimes of Greater Social Connotation compared to pre-pandemic years”.
For his part, the mayor of Estación Central, Felipe Muñoz, highlighted the articulation of this work that has allowed important advances in the Plaza Argentina sector.
