Indonesian weightlifter in the 73kg class, Rizki Juniansyah, admitted that he was not aware that he had broken the Olympic record.

Rizki successfully won the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal in the 73kg class. Rizki failed in the first snatch lift with a weight of 155kg.

However, in the second attempt, Rizki managed to lift the same weight. In the last snatch, he tried to lift 162kg but failed.

In the clean and jerk, Rizki was smooth in the first lift of 191kg. The 21-year-old lifter then increased his lifting weight to 199kg in the second lift which became an Olympic record. Rizki’s total lift was 354kg.

“I really didn’t expect to be able to lift 199 kg. And yesterday I didn’t know that it was an Olympic record. Because the Olympic record is only 198 kg. And my best lift was 201 kg in Thailand yesterday for the Olympic qualification,” said Rizki at a press conference via zoom meeting, Friday (9/8).

For the record and successfully getting a gold medal, Rizki also admitted to being very grateful. Because, he has succeeded in giving the best for Indonesia.

“Alhamdulillah, the 199kg (lift) was able to overtake the Thai (athlete) lift and that was the lift that determined me to get the Olympic gold medal,” he said.

Meanwhile, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Weightlifting Association (PB PABSI), Rosan P Roeslani, also admitted that he was very grateful for the gold medal won by Rizki.

“First of all, of course we are grateful to Allah Subhanahu wa Taala and express our highest gratitude and appreciation to the President, to all Indonesian people who have been together in prayer and spirit, and as a result we know Rizki has succeeded in winning the gold medal,” said Rosan.

The gold medal, said Rosan, is a new history for the Indonesian weightlifting sport. Because it is the first time.

“This is history for weightlifting. Indeed, during the Olympics, we always got silver and bronze and this is the first time weightlifting has won a gold medal,” he said.

Rosan also hopes that Rizki can continue his positive trend after winning the medal. He also hopes that other Indonesian weightlifters can be more motivated by Rizki’s achievements.

“Rizki has just graduated from Junior, so it’s still long. We also have many athletes of Rizki’s class in the National Training Center. So in the future, God willing, we can also get positive results for the country and the Red and White that we are proud of,” he concluded. (Ndf)
