Last March, the Saudi Cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Education of China to teach Mandarin. In February 2019, the decision to teach Mandarin in Saudi schools was made during the visit of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the Chinese capital, Beijing.

The new decision was announced at a time when the country is preparing to start studying Mandarin in the second grade, Arabic daily Okaz reported. Projects have been developed in collaboration with various organizations in the field of education and training to introduce the language to the general public.
