River overflow in Sucre caused flooding

  • Some homes in the affected areas were flooded by the rising rivers and streams.

Several sectors of the Sucre state were affected by the heavy rains recorded since August 10, which caused the Guatapanare River and the Chacha stream to overflow in the Valdez municipality.

The rise of these two streams also caused flooding in streets and homes in the communities of Valle Verde, La Frontera, Barrio Ajuro, Nueva Güiria, Río Salado, Guarama, Río Bautista, Guayacán and El Cedrito.

Isaiah Hernandez, coordinator of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Caritas Güiria, said in an interview for Radio Faith and Joy that there is no official balance of the affected homes.

However, Civil Protection of the state of Sucre was deployed in the affected areas to address the situation and verify the damage caused by the flooding in the homes.

Other municipalities of Sucre affected

The Tunapuicito River, in the Benítez municipality, also overflowed and caused flooding in several homes in the communities of Quebrada Adentro, Quebrada de Mono, Tunapuicito, Vista Alegre, La Hierba and Javillar.

In the Mariño municipality, the Soro, Bautista and Salado rivers were reported to have overflowed, causing damage to roads in the Irpa sectors.

They also recorded the rise of the Guarama and Yoco streams that affected the houses in the Eje de Paria area, according to a report from the correspondent in the state of Union Radio.

In the Montes municipality they also reported the rise in the flow levels of the Manzanares River, which in July of this year caused severe damage to surrounding communities.

Overflow of the Orinoco River in Monagas

On August 10, 55 families were also reported to have been affected by the overflow of the Orinoco River in the municipality of Sotillo in the state of Monagas.

José Gregorio Maldonado, mayor of the municipality of Sotillo, reported that they attended to those affected by the flooding of the Orinoco River due to the rains recorded in recent days in the state.

“They have been living in this community for many years; more than 70 years living with nature and it is up to us as a municipality to respond to this community,” Maldonado told the media. The Truth of Monagas.

He added that due to flooding and the risk of mosquito proliferation, a fumigation campaign was launched to prevent the appearance of diseases, especially among children and the elderly.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) predicted for August 11 and 12, rains with greater incidence in the afternoon and evening hours.

It is estimated that cloud cover with rains of varying intensity will be more intense in the Capital District, Miranda, Carabobo, Aragua, southern Zulia, the Andes, Central and Western Plains, Guárico, Bolívar, Amazonas and Essequibo.

Inameh added that tropical wave number 29 is expected to arrive in national territory at the beginning of the week, with the possibility of becoming a tropical depression as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

Regarding the state of the coasts, the meteorological agency predicts a storm surge with waves up to one metre high on the Eastern, Central and Western coasts on the afternoon of 11 August.
