The animal rights organization Gaïa has called on actor Jean-Claude Van Damme to the rescue in his fight once morest the slaughter of animals without stunning. In a short video, the ex-action movie star, from the capital, called on Brussels parliamentarians to approve the ban on this practice on Friday.
Last Wednesday, a proposal to ban slaughter without stunning was narrowly rejected by a parliamentary committee, the text having received as many votes for as once morest. On Friday, it will be the plenary session’s turn to vote on the committee’s report. Given the divisions within some parties, supporters of the ban hope that the report will be rejected and that the proposal can be approved.
The president of Gaïa reiterated his plea in a press release. “Perhaps Jean-Claude Van Damme will be able to influence the Brussels parliamentarians to take the most ethical, progressive and justifiable decision in the interest of the weakest and most vulnerable party: the animals. The only correct decision, in accordance with modern standards and values regarding the treatment of animals in 2022 in our democratic state of law, is to no longer allow the exception of slaughter on religious grounds, to prohibit slaughter without prior stunning in the Brussels-Capital Region as well and therefore to impose this same stunning“, did he declare.
