Ritual for reform in the assembly of indigenous peoples in Tlatelolco

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— The National Council of Indigenous Peoples (CNPI) yesterday inaugurated the assembly with which they will analyze and ratify the constitutional reform for the rights of indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities, presented by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco woke up ready to receive hundreds of visitors from indigenous communities throughout Mexico, gathered to celebrate the National Assembly of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples.

“We know that our grandparents have forged a path and we know that we will soon achieve that path. We have a long way to go. Today we begin a new stage in the struggle and history of our people,” proclaimed the general coordinator of the CNPI, Yanet del Rosario Cruz, during the celebration of the event.

The Plaza de las Tres Culturales in Tlatelolco is of historical and cultural significance for Mexicans, as it was here that the massacre of the Mexicas by the Spanish conquistadors took place in 1521 and more recently it was the scene of the repression against hundreds of students in the protests of 1968. The ceremony to bless the assembly was held there.

The meeting will ratify the initiative to reform the constitutional rights of indigenous people in Mexico, where more than 23 million people identify as such out of a total of 126 million inhabitants.

Yesterday’s event featured ceremonial costumes, music and ancestral songs to ask for permission and blessing from Mother Earth and to achieve a good outcome of the reform that is being debated today in the Congress of the Union.

The event, a colorful celebration with traditional elements from several of the country’s 68 indigenous communities, is the prelude to the convention that has been taking place since yesterday and today, Friday, in the framework of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, which is celebrated every August 9.

On Wednesday we published that Pedro Regalado Uc Be, representative of the Assembly of Defenders of the Maya Territory Múuch Xíinbal, denounced that the indigenous people will serve as justification for the approval of the reforms of the law of indigenous peoples. This has generated concern because it does not include the true demands of this sector of the population.
