Electric scooter users often have several people on the same machine
In Belgium, 49% of electric scooter users admitted to having ridden with others over the last month, which is higher than the European average (38%). In addition, 46% of Belgian scooter users indicate that they run a red light every month. Here once more, Belgium is above the European average (34%), notes Vias. More than 60% also drive on the sidewalk, even though the highway code prohibits this behavior.
Some 40% of those surveyed had driven at least once in the past month while drinking too much. “The electric scooter is certainly not a safe mode of transport when you are under the influence of alcohol. The slightest unexpected movement can unbalance you and cause you to fall heavily. As a reminder, the legal alcohol limit of 0.5 ? also applies to driving an electric scooter.”
This ESRA survey carried out in 39 countries including 22 in the European Union did not only focus on the use of a scooter. Nearly one in five Belgians say they have driven a vehicle two hours following taking medication that impairs their driving abilities. Vias deplores the vagueness surrounding the consumption of medications and its link with driving. “It is up to the doctor and the pharmacist to inform the patient of the possible alteration of the driver’s abilities. For a long time now, the Vias Institute has been in favor of affixing a color code to the packaging of medicines indicating their possible impact on driving ability.”
