Rising Youth Crime and Murders in London: Impact on Mayoral Election and Public Safety

The Metropolitan Police said there were 110 murders recorded in the 620 square mile (1,605 square kilometer) Greater London area it is responsible for in 2023 – just one more than in 2022. However, the number of deaths among local youth who were attacked has risen sharply.

In clinical crime statistics, 14 deaths were classified as domestic homicides, down 18 percent on the previous 12 months. Twenty-one of those killed were teenagers (50% more than last year), and 71 people died from stab wounds.

The young age of the victims and the manner of their deaths have not gone unnoticed in the UK, increasing public and political concern regarding knife crime. Among those alarmed by the wave of murders are many who are trying to stop the current mayor Sadik Khan to win a third term in local elections in May, as well as their supporters in the media, who are increasingly calling the British capital “lawless London.”

“Sadiq Khan simply hasn’t done enough and we can’t afford another four years under his leadership,” Conservative mayoral candidate says Susan Hallreferring to his Labor Party rival.

Khan, in turn, blames the Conservatives for financial and personnel cuts, saying they have effectively left the London police to fight crime alone, with their “hands tied behind their backs”.

One of the most outrageous cases that received wide public attention was the murder of a 15-year-old girl who was stabbed to death on her way to school last September. Since the beginning of 2024, the bloodshed on the streets of “lawless London” has not stopped, the publication says.
