With galloping inflation for a year, there is one certainty: going on vacation for the summer will cost you more than in 2022.
Very expensive holidays… Taking the car, the train or the plane always costs a little more, just like renting a house or a hotel room. On the occasion of the summer school holidays, franceinfo looked at daily expenses – the prices of which have risen sharply compared to 2022 -, but also at the prices for leaving.

From the hotel night to the stay in summer rental, through tolls or airports, and summer shopping, we take stock.
The star products of the summer on the rise
Summer essentials are not immune to inflation. Our summer shopping basket, made up of 25 star summer vacation products, in partnership with France Bleu and NielsenIQ, increased by 12% between June 2022 and June 2023. It is mozzarella that increases the most, with a inflation at 30% over one year. On the shelves, a pack of mozzarella sells for 28 cents more than in June 2022. “It’s not a surprise, because everything that goes into its composition has increased very strongly”, recalls Emmanuel Fournet, analytical director at NielsenIQ. Overall, it is also food products that have increased the most because the cost of animal feed has exploded.
The aperitif stars are no exception to this trend. On your ticket, you pay on average for a bottle of rosé nearly 50 cents more than last year. Ditto for a bottle of pastis. And the pack of flavored beers costs more than €1.50 more than in June 2022. Sunscreen also sees its price jump: a tube sells for one euro more expensive than last year.
The prices of the train on the rise, those of the plane explode
If you have opted for the train for your holidays, you surely have a difference with the price of last year. And this is normal: according to the consumer price index maintained by INSEEthe price of trains increased by more than 8% between May 2022 and May 2023. This is a little more than the average increase of 5% announced by the SNCF at the start of the year, to absorb the explosion in prices for energy.
If you go by plane, it’s worse: prices have exploded. According to the data from the general directorate of civil aviationa ticket is 21% more expensive this year than in 2022. Here once more, increases in fuel prices are the main cause of this jump in prices, according to specialists in the sector.
At the tolls, a higher bill than before
As franceinfo revealed to you last week, going to the toll costs on average 4.75% more than in 2022. But the analysis of 3,128 road sections has revealed much larger increases, which can go to -over 10% in places. Motorway prices in the South of France, and particularly in the South-East for that matter, have increased more than the national average. Bad news for holidaymakers who have chosen the Côte-d’Azur or the Alps to enjoy the summer.

Hotels, vacation rentals: different increases depending on the region
According to the Particulier à Particulier rental site, renting a house or apartment for the holidays is 4.9% more expensive at the start of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022. In detail, this is 4.3% increase for an apartment and 5.3% for a house. And the differences from one region to another can be significant: on average, renting accommodation requires 1,399 euros for a stay on the Côte d’Azur, once morest 714 in Normandy.
Going to a hotel is also more expensive this year: the price of a room has increased by 15% over the January-May period compared to the same period in 2022, according to data from the firm MKG Consulting, specializing in the hospitality sector. A hotel room now costs an average of 109.40 euros excluding tax Here too, the more touristy the region, the more prices have exploded. “Compared to 2019, we are on increases of 20 to 30%”adds Vanguelis Panayotis, president of the cabinet. “There have been cost increases, around 10 to 15%, but the increase is also significant, because there has been a rebound in footfall which is driving prices up.”
