After a slight increase in September, the unemployment rate in Quebec this time increased by 0.5 percentage points, reaching 4.9% for the month of October, according to Statistics Canada data released Friday.

The number of workers in La Belle Province decreased by 0.5% for the 10th month of the year.

If full-time positions fell by 0.9% between September and October 2023, part-time positions recorded growth of 1.5% for the same period.

The census metropolitan area (CMA) of Montreal has not followed the same progression as that observed in the province since the unemployment rate is now set at 6%, compared to 5% in September.

Nationally, the unemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 5.7%, representing a fourth monthly increase in the last six months.

“Since April, the rate has increased by 0.7 percentage points, following remaining at a near-record low of 5.0% from December 2022 to April 2023,” noted Statistics Canada.

Employment was little changed, increasing just 0.1%, or 18,000 new workers in Canada.

The number of employees particularly increased in the construction sector (+1.5%), which helped to offset the 1.1% drop seen in September.

In the same wave, following a decrease of 1.4% the previous month, employment in the information, culture and leisure sector increased by 2.5% in October.

“In the wholesale and retail trade sector, employment fell by 22,000 (-0.7%) in October, which represents the first decline since October 2022,” mentioned the federal agency.

More young people unemployed

The unemployment rate among Canadians aged 15 to 24 is a little more than double that of adults aged 25 to 54, reaching 11.4% and 4.8% respectively for the month of October.

“This is an increase from March, when the youth unemployment rate was 2.1 higher than the rate for core-aged adults, but was virtually unchanged from the average of 2019, before the pandemic,” said Statistics Canada.
