Rising Turbulence in Air Travel: Impact of Global Warming on Flight Safety

Eleven people were injured in a Delta Airlines Airbus A350 which was heading to Atlanta (USA) from Madrid (Spain) following severe turbulence. In 40 years, turbulence in the sky has increased by 40%, global warming would be the cause.

According to information from media France Live, eleven people were injured following very strong turbulence during a Madrid-Atlanta flight aboard an Airbus A350. Climate change leads, according to scientists, to an increase in turbulence. They have doubled in 40 years.

It was shortly before landing, about sixty kilometers from Atlanta that the aircraft suffered an episode of strong turbulence, Tuesday August 29, 2023. An episode of very high intensity which surprised the 151 passengers and the 14 members of crew.

Eleven people were taken care of by the emergency services at Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta. “Caring for our injured customers and crew is our priority. We are grateful to the first responders who welcomed the aircraft to provide medical care and transported the injured to hospital”explained the company Delta Airlines.

For forty years, the number of incidents related to turbulence would have jumped by 50% in 40 years according to a study by the University of Reading

Several scientists see it as the mark of global warming, an opinion shared by the president of Aviation sans frontières, Gérald Feldzer in an interview at Point : “Turbulence occurs when two air currents of different speed, heat and direction meet. The air at ground level heats up and rises at the same time. The cold cloud air, heavier, descends. The crossing of the two is called wind shear. With global warming, the warmer the air, the more the shear increases”.
