Of the 122 acute poisoning patients who were transported by emergency to seven emergency medical institutions across Japan from May 2009 to December 2010 due to an overdose of over-the-counter drugs, the average age was 25.8 years old, and 97 of them were women. (79.5%), according to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare research group on the 16th. It is also seen as a means of escaping from reality, and there is concern that dependence and abuse are spreading, especially among young women.
Yoshihito Kamijo, director of the Saitama Medical University Clinical Poisoning Center, who is part of the research group, said, “It’s related to the ease of obtaining over-the-counter drugs, so it’s necessary to take countermeasures at physical stores such as drugstores.” A detailed analysis of the reasons why there are many young female patients is yet to be done, but it is believed that the fact that SNS is often used as a means of obtaining information regarding overdose is having an effect.
According to the research team, this is the first epidemiological study of a patient who has overdosed on over-the-counter drugs. 122 people were taken to hospital with symptoms such as nausea, unconsciousness and confusion. There were no deaths. Fifty people (41.0%) were in their twenties, and 43 people (35.2%) were in their teens.
A total of 189 over-the-counter drugs were used, including 47 antipyretic analgesics (24.9%), 35 cough medicines (18.5%), and 34 cold medicines (18.0%).
