Climbing from balcony to balcony and repeatedly exposing yourself to the risk of falling off the building – what generally sounds like a rather stupid idea is all the rage in Mallorca right now. The phenomenon is called “balconing”.

The case of a 54-year-old Australian shows that the trend can be dangerous – especially on an island where alcohol flows freely. As the “Mallorca Magazin” reports, the man died in July 2023 while balconing.

Several tourists have already been fined

The local government wants to tackle the dangerous trend – with fines. Anyone caught balconing must have one steep fines of 36,000 euros or the equivalent of 34,000 francs pay, as ArgoviaToday writes. According to the municipality, five tourists have already been fined.

In recent years, the Spanish island adopted increasingly strict rulesto cut down on drinking tourism.
