Rising Trend: More Workers Retiring Early Before the Legal Retirement Age in 2022

In 2022, four out of 10 workers retired before the legal age of 65, 10% more than in 2021. The self-employed are even more likely to leave the labor market before their 65th birthday: more than half of them retire before age 65, HR provider Acerta said in a statement on Thursday.

A large proportion of the self-employed retire before their 65th birthday. More than half (55.12%) of them stop working before the legal retirement age (65), i.e. 5% more than in 2021.

“The gap between the self-employed and salaried workers is significant. Of the Belgian workers who retired in 2022, 41.17% did so before the current legal age of 65. It is therefore approximately 15 percentage points less than for the self-employed”, explain Acerta

“The proportion of Belgians who take advantage of opportunities for early exit from the labor market continues to rise sharply. As a society, we will therefore have to make an extra effort to maintain the attractiveness of work, including for people over the age of 60. The pension bonus aims to achieve this objective, thanks to a financial incentive”, explains Ellen Van Grunderbeek of Acerta.
