Rising STD Cases in Santander: Urgent Need for Prevention and Education

So far in 2023, 694 cases of people with Sexually Transmitted Diseases, STDs, have been registered in Santander, 103 more than those registered last year at the same time.

After this unusual increase in reports, the health authorities expressed their concern regarding this trend, urging the population to take preventive measures and seek medical care in a timely manner.

According to the statistics included in the Sivigila reports, of all STD cases, 249 gestational syphilis records have been made official; 366 from HIV/AIDS, of which five patients have already died; and 58 from Hepatitis B and C.

The report does not yet contemplate the records of those affected with gonorrhea.

According to experts on the subject, “the lack of sexual education and the scant use of protection methods, such as condoms, have been identified as the main causes of this increase.”

Among the most infected population groups, it has been identified that young people appear as those who are part of the highest risk group, in addition to sex workers and people who consume intravenous drugs. The Santander Ministry of Health made a call to the community regarding the impact that this can have on the health of the population.

“It is essential that the community is informed regarding preventive measures and the importance of regular tests to detect any sexually transmitted disease,” the experts warned.

Faced with this situation, the health authorities of Santander have intensified education and prevention sessions throughout the region.

Thus, various informative talks have been promoted in schools, colleges and community centers, in addition to distributing educational material and condoms for free.
